That changed with the release of PS one’s DualShock controller, but it wasn’t until the first Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved hit Xbox Live Arcade (after starting as merely a mini-game in Project Gotham Racing 2) that dual-stick shooters became a mainstay of downloadable and indie gaming. The home versions never really worked though, because the games relied on having two joysticks – one to control movement and the other to aim and fire your weapon. Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions is available now for PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Xbox 360.We’ve only ever seen an actual Robotron coin-op a couple of times in real-life, and even the first time several years after we fell in love with its spiritual sequel Smash T.V. It’ll take some time to collect this much, so be sure to upgrade drones first.

The price for upgrades is about the same as drones, costing roughly 25,000 multiplier orbs that you can pick up throughout each stage. Most of these come in the form of bombs that explode whenever an enemy touches one, but you can unlock variations, and like drones, level them up. In addition to drones and bombs, your ships will eventually come with Supers, which you can unleash through drones to really bring the hurt. You’ll see how effective your upgrade is right away, indicated through a power bar that appears beneath the drone. Upgrades usually cost about 25,000 multiplier orbs, so make sure you pick up as many as you can. This will increase their overall performance, especially when it comes to improved firing capabilities. However, you’ll want to make sure you upgrade drones as often as you can. Once you defeat the boss (which should be easy if you follow our tips from the beginner’s guide), you’ll unlock that drone, and can continue to use it over the course of each stage – even levels you beat before. Simply make your way through the game’s Adventure mode and compete against bosses. Finally, the Snipe drone destroys enemies from long range.

From there, we have the Ram, a drone that crazily runs towards enemies to destroy them. Eventually you’ll unlock the Collector, a drone that picks up extra multiplier orbs you can’t reach. You’ll start with Attack, a drone that flies around and shoots enemies. Over the course of Geometry Wars 3, you’ll gain access to new drones that serve secondary purposes.
